When couples start touring wedding venues in Minnesota, one of the most important questions to ask often gets overlooked: can we choose our own vendors? The answer shapes your budget, your menu, your photos, and how personal the day feels. A venue with an open vendor policy gives you that freedom, and it can make a real difference in both cost and experience.
We are a wedding venue in Minnesota with an open vendor policy, which means couples are not locked into a required caterer, a required bar service, or a preferred vendor list with limited choices. Below, we explain what an open vendor policy is, how it compares to a closed one, and why it often gives couples more value for their investment.

An open vendor policy means the venue allows you to bring in the outside professionals you want to work with, rather than requiring you to use vendors the venue has chosen. That usually applies to catering, bar service, photography, floral, entertainment, and more.
With an open policy, you are free to hire the caterer whose food you love, work with a photographer whose style matches your vision, and shape the day around your preferences instead of the venue’s contracts.
A closed vendor policy requires couples to use the venue’s in-house services or a short approved list. That can feel convenient, but it often removes flexibility and can raise costs, because you have fewer options to compare on price and quality.
An open vendor policy puts those decisions back in your hands. You can request quotes from multiple caterers, choose a photographer who already fits your budget, and avoid markups that sometimes come with required services.
We allow couples to choose their own caterer with no catering minimum, bring their own alcohol served by a licensed bartender, and hire their own photographer. If couples prefer, our own photography and photo booth services are available too, but they are never required. The choice stays with you.
Cost is one of the biggest reasons couples value an open vendor policy. When you are free to compare options, you gain more control over where your budget goes.
Catering is often one of the largest wedding expenses. When a venue lets you choose freely, you can request quotes from several caterers, compare menus, and select an option that fits both your taste and your budget. Because we do not require a specific caterer or set a catering minimum, couples can plan a menu that works for them.
Bar service adds up quickly, especially when a venue marks up drinks or requires a package. We allow couples to bring their own alcohol, served by a licensed bartender in line with Minnesota law. That flexibility often reduces one of the more unpredictable costs of a wedding day.
Photography styles and price points vary widely. When you are free to hire your own photographer, you can find someone whose work you love at a price that makes sense for you, rather than being tied to a single required option.
Not every venue defines “flexible” the same way, so it helps to ask specific questions on a tour.
Some venues say they allow outside catering but still require an approved list or charge additional fees. Ask directly whether you can bring the caterer of your choice and whether any minimums apply. At our venue, couples can bring their own caterer with no catering minimum.
Bar rules vary by venue and by state. Ask whether you can supply your own alcohol and how bartending is handled. We allow couples to bring their own alcohol, served by a licensed bartender to keep the day both enjoyable and compliant.
An open vendor policy is even more valuable when the venue already includes the essentials. Our rental includes tables, chairs, linens, décor, centerpieces, day-of staff, setup assistance, and full cleanup, so couples save on the details while still choosing their own outside vendors.
An open vendor policy is not only about cost. It is also about creating a day that feels like yours. When you choose the people who cook the food, capture the photos, and shape the celebration, the day reflects your personality more closely.
We are a rustic elegant venue on ten scenic countryside acres in Dodge Center, about twenty minutes west of Rochester and roughly seventy-five minutes south of the Twin Cities. Between our open vendor policy, indoor and outdoor ceremony options, two private getting-ready suites, and included amenities, our goal is to give couples both freedom and support on their wedding day.
If having the freedom to choose your own vendors matters to you, an open vendor policy should be near the top of your venue checklist. We would love to show you how our flexible approach, transparent pricing starting at $3,995, and scenic Minnesota setting can come together for your celebration.
